‘Yellow Post’ is the winning entry in the 2025 Brick Bay Folly Competition, sited at Brick Bay Sculpture Park, Matakana, Aotearoa New Zealand.
This project is inspired by our fascination of traditional hākari structures erected by iwi in the Northland regions of Aotearoa. These ceremonial stages acted as a place of manaakitanga, a congregational space where iwi tribes would gather for various events, including resolution of conflict, tangi, naming of children and reciprocation of previous hospitality. Importantly, it embodied the ritual of congregation, celebration and togetherness.
Monumental in size, these timber scaffold-like structures where only erected for a few days at a time before disassembly.
‘YELLOW POST’
‘Yellow Post’ celebrates the ritual, scale and structural wonderness of the hākari structures, with an 11 metre high timber structure that delicately rests next to the main entrance of Brick Bay.
Painted in celebratory yellow, ‘Yellow Post’ is a marker in the landscape, signalling arrival and departure of visitors to Brick Bay.
Collaboration with George Culling, Andre Vachias & Henry Mabin.
